Pediatric - Occupational Therapy Manchester
What is Occupational Therapy Manchester?
Advanced Therapy Solutions Pediatric occupational therapists work with children with a variety of disorders including autism, ADD/ADHD, Down syndrome, sensory integration problems, handwriting difficulties, feeding disorders and visual processing disorders. All of these conditions can affect a child’s ability to do daily tasks such as getting dressed, going to the bathroom, eating, coloring, writing and interacting appropriately with others.
Every parent has hopes and dreams for their child, and those who have children with therapeutic needs are no different. That’s why at Advanced Therapy Solutions, we celebrate the uniqueness of every child as we create a tailored treatment plan designed just for them. Whether helping children achieve physical breakthroughs or meet life skill milestones, our therapists use their training, knowledge and experience to create structure and opportunities for success.
Our therapists help children be successful in the many “jobs” of childhood, including play, self-care, school performance and social interactions. Developing these skills is critical for transition to the independence required in adulthood. As pediatric occupational therapists, we address many skills needed for success in a child’s daily life.
Pediatric occupational therapy focuses on the child’s “occupation” which includes play, self-care skills, feeding skills, upper extremity motor skills, and fine motor coordination. Occupational therapy treatment often includes: grasping, handwriting, dexterity, object manipulation, and visual motor activities.
OT at Advanced Therapy Solutions makes it possible for children, adolescents and young adults with injuries, physical challenges or developmental disabilities to engage in normal daily life to the greatest extent possible. OT’s address skills such as fine motor development, sensory processing, motor planning, eye hand coordination and visual motor skills to name a few!
What Occupational Therapy Manchester Offers
For children, OT focuses on developing specific life skills. Through specific exercises and task-related activities, occupational therapists help your child learn or regain these critical skills. When skill and strength cannot be developed or improved, we work with your child and family in developing creative alternatives to achieve goals.
Duties of an Occupational Therapist:
The Occupational Therapist assesses how behavior and sensorimotor development affect your child’s ability to learn. With the younger child, the occupational therapist is interested in their activity level, tolerance of stimulation, feeding and hand function. In the older child, the ability to organize sensory information (touch, movement, vision…) is related to perceptual skills, hand skills and activity level. Therapy is designed to seem like play to the children, yet the therapist draws upon extensive training in specialty areas to provide challenging therapeutic activities aimed at developing greater capabilities.
After a thorough occupational therapy evaluation, the evaluating therapist will recommend a therapy program that is best suited to meet your child’s needs. Recommendations may include individual, group or intensive therapy options. We incorporate activities that are motivating to your child to make therapy fun and to facilitate progress.
Advanced Therapy Solutions Occupational Therapy Program helps children improve function and promote development to be more independent in their homes, schools and communities. Our Occupational Therapists use play, therapeutic activities, and special techniques to develop motor sensory, visual, attention and decision-making skills so children can be successful in their world.
There are a variety of tools used to evaluate your child’s occupational therapy needs. The therapist will engage them in play and ask them to do different tasks to assess their strengths and difficulties. They may ask your child to respond verbally to questions or to trace or copy different shapes, letters or sentences depending on their age. Your input and observations as a parent will also be taken into consideration as part of the evaluation process.
After the evaluation, the occupational therapist will create a treatment plan that may include:
- Handwriting (visual-motor skills, awkward grip style)
- Touch, sound, movement, and smell sensitivities that often result in:
- Difficulty with bath time, hair brushing/cutting
- Strong clothing preferences
- Avoidance of natural movement experiences on the playground
- Distractibility and difficulty paying attention
- Strong food preferences
- Avoidance of certain environments (public bathrooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, etc.)
- Emotional lability
- Aggression towards self and others
